As tensions in the Middle East escalate following high-profile assassinations linked to Israel, the Pakistani Foreign Office on Thursday condemned Israeli “adventurism” and called for accountability over the killing of Ismail Haniyeh.
“Israel’s recent actions represent a dangerous escalation that undermines efforts for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. Israel must be held accountable for its actions,” said Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch at the weekly media briefing.
The spokesperson urged the United States and other Western supporters of Israel to pressure Israel to stop its illegal military activities, respect regional sovereignty, and adhere to international law.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar tweeted, “Pakistan will observe a National Day of Mourning tomorrow and hold a funeral prayer in absentia for the Chief of Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh. The Parliament of Pakistan will also debate the ongoing genocide in Gaza.”
Response to Israeli Actions in Beirut
The Foreign Office also condemned an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed Shukr, without directly naming Hezbollah.
“Israel’s military aggression in Beirut is a grievous infringement on Lebanon’s sovereignty. This attack on civilian areas is a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter,” said Ms. Baloch.
Expressing solidarity with the Lebanese people, she reiterated Pakistan’s support for their right to peace, security, and sovereignty. She condemned the targeting of individuals within sovereign states as a breach of international law, warning that such actions could further escalate tensions.
Iran’s Concerns About Parachinar
The spokesperson rejected Iranian concerns over violence in Pakistan’s Kurram district, where Parachinar’s Shia community was targeted.
“Such statements about Pakistan’s domestic affairs are unwarranted. We believe these statements are based on an incomplete picture of the situation in Parachinar,” said the spokesperson.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani had condemned attacks targeting Shia Muslims in Parachinar, emphasizing the urgency of decisive action against militant groups to protect residents.
“Pakistan, as a multi-cultural and multi-faith society, is fully committed to fostering social harmony, tolerance, and mutual respect,” said Ms. Baloch.
At least 49 people were killed and several hundred injured in last week’s clashes in Parachinar. The violence, initially over a property dispute, quickly escalated into sectarian conflict spreading to nearby villages and settlements. A ceasefire was agreed upon by warring tribes on Sunday.
